Palace of old Hospital

The palace was built in the seventeenth century. around the ancient church of S. Paul. The health care facility replaced an existing infirmary for the crews of the galleys, set up by the Knights of Rhodes between 1523 and i11530.

The hospital was divided into two distinct sections: the Military Hospital of SS. Conception and the Hospital of St. Paul. In 1638, the two structures were joined by a bridge and its management was taken over by ‘Confraternity of the Banner Hospitaller Order of St. John of God (Fatebenefratelli).

Under Pope Innocent XI, the hospital was renovated and enlarged thanks to the intervention of the Treasurer General Giuseppe Renato Imperiali, as the inscription dating back to 1688, located on the corner of Old Infirmary garrison in Via Mura.

The building has been used as a health facility until the ’70s, when it was built the new hospital, which it retains the name of S. Paul. After many years of neglect, the building was heavily restored to its former glory.

Today it is the seat of the ‘Historical Archive and Notary of the City of Civitavecchia, where they found suitable location important and ancient documents useful for historical reconstruction of the city and its traditions. The ‘Archives include including books, records, parcels, parchments and papers 4950 units, from 1451 until 1959. The oldest document is a revision of the Statute of the Lands of Civitavecchia just dating to 1451. Were joined in the Archive also some documents filed with the Municipal Library which the fund diplomat, some of the oldest books of the municipal councils, the ‘Archive Cialdi and’ Archive Guglielmotti besides the books of local history.

At the beginning of ’700 was initiated transaction reordering of ‘Historical Archives, but only in 1884 the City Council decided to extend the initiative to all documents.

World War II destroyed most of the papers, the remainder after a number of transfers also went out of the city was reduced to a pile of papers deposited at three different stores owned by the city.

Finally in 1998 the second floor of the Hospital of Piazza Calamatta was created the new archival structure, where a cozy reading room you can see the documents supported by competent personnel.
