Allumiere owes its origin to the presence of mines and alunite, in fact, there are many quarries distributed throughout the territory; remember the “Cava del Moro”, today known as the “Quarry of Silence”, which is located inside the beech forest of Allumiere, the “Cava of Fear”, near the Monte delle Grazie, the “Cava Gangalandi” along the road that joins Allumiere Tolfa, the “Cava Grande”, the “Cava Civieri” and “Cava Gregorian”, along the road that leads to the ancient village of “Old Cave”.
All these quarries have changed enormously the character of the landscape because it is real cuts of the mountains. After 1850, thanks to the contractor at the time, Klitsche de la Grange, the quarries were replaced by those excavated tunnel. The best known of these is the “Mine S.Barbara”, so named for the altar of St. Barbara, located almost at the entrance of the excavation, in front of which they used to pray the miners before descending into the mine. It is located within the beech forest of Allumiere.
